Part 1
Concepts Being Pursued
I am pursuing both the Removable Hinge Clip and Sliding Keychain designs. These designs not only work for the iPhone but other smartphones as well. Both designs allow the user to hold the phone horizontally or vertically. They also allow the user to hold the phone in different angles. The Hinge Clip is easy to set up and take apart. It will also fit unobtrusively in a pocket. The sliding keychain also comes apart easily.
Refinements
Removable Hing Clip Refinements
I made a number of refinements to the original Removable Hinge Clip. The first prototype only allowed the phone to be held horizontally and not vertically. This limited the user in how the device could be used. In order for the clip to be used both horizontally and vertically I made the base and arm equal the height of the iPhone. Although this is still in an early prototype phase I made the mechanism stiffer by inserting a bent paperclip in the hole that connects the base to arm.
Sliding Keychain Refinements
I tried to minimize the design of the sliding keychain. The current prototype is not intended to slide but to hold the phone in a fixed manner. I will be using other materials than Legos for future design work. As can be seen in the photos below, the phone can be held vertically or horizontally. The sliding feature will allow even more angles for the phone position.

Part 2
Testing Process
I submitted a survey to 12 people that explained the background of this class as well as the project I am working on. Descriptions and drawings were given for three of the prototype ideas. Survey questions are given below.

2. Retractable Tripod
The tripod legs are stored in a case that snaps on the phone. The legs are flexible allowing the phone to be fixed in numerous positions. However, the iPhone can only be used vertically.
3. Sliding Keychain
This is a removable device that allows the phone to be fixed in a numerous angles. The keychain rests on a surface and supports the phone.

Survey Results
I adopted the survey methodology mentioned in the lecture and made some changes using the following scoring system:
Would definitely not purchase -2
Would probably not purchase -1
Undecided 0
Might purchase 1

The results were rather mixed but I decided to pursue the Hinge Clip and Keychain designs. The strongest preference was for the keychain design that I also favored. Only three of the twelve participants didn't care for the sliding keychain. Six people didn't care for the Hinge Clip and six didn't care for the Tripod.
I also asked the participants to provide any comments or suggestions. I received a lot of feedback that will greatly help me in building the Beta prototype.
Last but not least are pictures of my latest prototypes.
